Information about childbirth
How to know when you are in labor
Most women give birth between weeks 38 and 42 of their pregnancy. Many, especially if it their first baby, think they will not identify the symptoms of labor when the time comes, or that they will have many false alarms before then.
We give our patients guidelines on how to recognize true labour when it starts, and how to prepare the final weeks of their pregnancy so that all goes as smoothly as possible.
Postpartum care
Breastfeeding your baby
The benefits of breastfeeding are well known. Maternal milk contains all the necessary nutrients in the right proportion, as well as antibodies to protect against infection. Breastfed babies tend to have fewer infections and allergies, and are rarely constipated. It is more convenient and economic for the mother than preparing bottles, and stimulates some hormones that are beneficial for the body after giving birth.
We provide guidelines during pregnancy about the best diet, as well as how to prepare the breasts to help avoid some of the specific problems that can occur such as chapped nipples or mastitis so that patients are prepared as best they can for breastfeeding.
