Dr. Joan Carles Galceran
Medical Oncology

Dr. Joan Carles Galceran graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Barcelona in 1987 and gained his PhD cum laude in 1992 at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. He was a resident in Medical Oncology at the Hospital Universitario Germans Trias i Pujol in Badalona. His background was completed when he gained the European Certificate in Medical Oncology in Vienna in November 1996.

After completing his residence, he joined the Medical Oncology Service at the Hospital de Terrassa (from June 1991 until April 1992). He subsequently joined the Medical Oncology Service at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona.

Dr. Joan Carles Galceran is co-founder and secretary of the Grupo Español de Tratamiento de Tumores Génito-Urinarios (SOGUG - Spanish Group for the Treatment of Genito-urinary Tumours), a member of the Grupo Español de Tumores de Cabeza y Cuello (CTT - Spanish Group for Head and Neck Tumours) and of the Grupo Español de Investigación de Sarcomas (GEIS - Spanish Group of Sarcoma Research). He has also been an associate Professor of Medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona since 1995, where he is in charge of the Medical Oncology optional course. Dr. Carles Galceran has published more than 70 refereed articles and more than 100 book chapters and congress papers.

His fields of interest are genito-urinary clinical oncology, head and neck tumours, clinical early-phase and translational research in the area of genetic polymorphisms and angiogenesis, among others, as targets in cancer therapy. He is in charge of national trials for the development of new drugs for the treatment of prostate, kidney and bladder cancer.

He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) and the Sociedad Española de Oncología Médica (SEOM). He participates in an expert advisory capacity in drawing up the CatSalut Oncoguies for the Generalitat de Catalunya.
