Acne the removal of acne scarring

acne

What is acne and who does it affect?

Acne is a dysfunction of the sebaceous follicles of the skin that can be caused by both the predisposition of the person themselves (not all teenagers get acne) and also by hormonal alterations that affect the sebaceous glands.

Why do I still have acne even though I'm over 30?
Hormones are mainly responsible for the prolonged acne that many women suffer from. It is important that tests are carried out for any hormonal imbalances associated with periods, or ovarian cysts etc. Other factors that can influence this condition are the use of oily make-up bases and stress.

Personalised treatment

  • One of the most effective treatments is the use of isotretinoin which is a derivative of vitamin A. This modifies the metabolism of the skin reducing the production of oily skin and therefore ensuring that the follicles don't get blocked up. The treatment lasts up to 12 months, is only available on prescription and the doses depends on the patient's weight. It is essential that during the treatment that there is strict use of contraception devices (because it can cause severe foetal damage) and you must not drink alcohol.
  • Peelings with Salicylic acid are also extremely effective in the deep cleansing of the pores but should only be carried out by a dermatologist.

How can the scarring be treated?

The small red marks can be easily removed by having a course of Glycolic acid peelings which again should only be carried out by a dermatologist.

For the deeper scarring the only solution is Fractional Erbium Laser treatment which can dramatically improve the appearance of these scars and, in some cases, result in the complete disappearance of scarring. It is a non invasive treatment that smoothes the skin surface without causing burns or wounds and allows the recovery of a normal appearance up to 24 hours after treatment. Depending on each case at least 3- 6 sessions are needed over a time period of up to two years. .
