Eyelid Tumours

Causes

Eyelid tumours can be benign (cysts, chalazion, styes, papillomas) or malignant (skin cancers).

Skin cancer of the eyelids is a common tumour. The most common type of eyelids cancer is basal cell carcinoma. Most of basal cell carcinoma may be removed with surgery. If untreated, these tumours may grow around the eye, in the socket, the paranasal sinuses and the brain. Other eyelids cancers include squamous cell carcinoma, sebaceous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma.

For the diagnosis a small biopsy of the affected area is performed to determine if an eyelid tumour is malignant.

Management

Malignant tumours are completely removed and the eyelid is reconstructed through plastic surgery techniques to return his appearance and normal functions.
