There are several areas of specialisation, including the Histopathology and Cytology Unit and the Immunohistochemistry and Molecular Pathology Unit. The Anatomical Pathology Service is part of the comprehensive cancer care programme at the Teknon Oncology Institute (Instituto Oncológico Teknon - IOT), in which it actively participates.

The Service also offers a programme that allows patients to obtain a second opinion from renowned specialists.

Specialised Pathological Anatomy Units

Histopathology

It has the necessary equipment to study tissues through tissue processing, staining and sample mounting. The study is conducted on biopsies, intraoperative biopsies, and surgical specimens.

General surgical pathology

  • Gynaecological pathology
  • Breast pathology
  • Foetal pathology
  • Digestive system pathology
  • Respiratory system pathology
  • Urological pathology and nephropathology

This screening technique includes exfoliative cytology, cervical-vaginal cytology, fluid cytology, serous cytology and fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology.

  • Gynaecological cytology
    • Triple smear (vaginal-cervical-endocervical smear)
    • Vaginal, endometrial, and vulvar cytology

Molecular pathology

  • Study of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
  • Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH)

Immunohistochemistry

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is used to identify specific antigens on tissue or cytological samples. It is essential to have a large panel of antibody markers to aid in the final diagnosis of the sample.

The immunohistochemical study is performed on tissue fixed in formalin and subsequently embedded in paraffin.

  • Classification of infectious agents
  • Prognostic and predictive factors
  • IHC marker panel in undifferentiated tumours
  • IHC marker panel for lymphomas
  • Automated antigen detection using highly sensitive polymers conjugated with HRP and 3’,5’-diaminobenzidine (DAB) as a chromogen

Consulting Pathologists Service (second opinion)

The professionals at our laboratory are highly skilled in different pathology disciplines and available for consultation. Cases are safeguarded with the strictest confidentiality and the material is returned to the professional or patient along with the report and any additional procedures performed.
