This new, modern semi-critical care unit is an intermediate care unit between the intensive care unit and the conventional hospital ward. It has seven single rooms and is equipped with all the necessary technology for the diagnosis and treatment of health conditions that require special monitoring and care.

Care is provided by a highly qualified team comprising doctors specialising in intensive care and cardiology. It has a team of specialised nursing staff trained to meet the needs of patients admitted to this unit.

In general, these are stable patients whose treatment needs do not depend on invasive treatments. However, due to the nature of the disease, they are susceptible to complications that must be resolved quickly.

Visiting hours and information for family members

The semi-critical care unit has a 24-hour companion service.

Visiting hours are flexible and adapted to the needs of family members who are constrained by work schedules, etc. The patient may be accompanied by one person 24 hours a day.

Visiting hours:
Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m
Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

No more than two companions may be in a single cubicle. It is important that companions organise visits so as not to overwhelm the patient or interfere with their rest.

To maintain the proper functioning of the unit and respect the rest and privacy of other patients, the unit staff will ask you to follow the rules, so that there is no more than one accompanying person per cubicle and a maximum of two people during visiting hours.

Please note that a team professional may ask visitors to leave the cubicle in order to carry out a treatment, examination or medical test.

The Semi-Critical Care Unit – Coronary Care Unit is linked to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at our hospital.

General rules

Operating hours are Monday 7 a.m. to Saturday 2 p.m., closed on Sundays and public holidays.

In the case of special procedures, the patient will be asked to sign the informed consent form or, if the patient is unable to do so, the duly authorised agent or representative will be asked to sign it. This document guarantees consent at the time of decision-making, after having received and understood the relevant information.

There are cases in which patients must remain under video surveillance to ensure their safety. The criteria for the use of video surveillance are established based on the clinical needs of the patient, or due to the situation of the cubicle, which makes direct viewing impossible. Video surveillance systems do not have any system for recording or remote transmission of images. The system monitors are located in the nursing control area, where only authorised personnel have access.

Silence helps patients recover, so please speak quietly, switch off or turn down the volume on your mobile phones, and do not make any noise when visiting a relative.

Admission is not recommended for children under 16 years of age, except in exceptional cases.

What can I expect as a patient in the unit?

Patients admitted to the semi-critical care unit are connected to a monitor via electrodes and other devices such as a pulse oximeter or blood pressure cuff, which provide information on their vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels), keeping the unit's professionals continuously informed.

The monitors have a system of visual and acoustic alarms of varying intensity, many of which are informative and do not pose a real risk to the patient.

The nursing team consists of two nurses working three shifts, and the doctors who care for the unit are at the clinic 24 hours a day.

The clinic also has an intensive care unit (ICU) that treats patients with more serious clinical conditions who require more invasive treatments. In the event of a worsening of their condition or temporary closure of the unit, transfer to this unit will be considered.

When can I get information about my relative admitted to the Semi-critical Care Unit?

Medical information will be provided upon the patient's admission to discuss the comprehensive care plan, Monday to Friday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The attending physician will contact you in the patient's cubicle.

Information regarding the patient's condition is confidential and will only be disclosed to immediate family members or loved ones designated by the patient.

To preserve confidentiality, medical information will not be given over the telephone, except in exceptional circumstances.

Upon admission, you will be asked to provide the names and telephone numbers of one or two family members so that they can be contacted and given information about decisions made regarding the patient (e.g. transfer to another unit) or if there have been any significant changes in their condition.

What can I do as a family member?

Family members may remain with the patient throughout visiting hours or during accompanying hours.

You may bring personal hygiene items (toothbrush and toothpaste, comb, shaving accessories, slippers, and dressing gown).

Entertainment material may be useful for passing the long hours of the day (tablet, laptop, books, magazines, radio with headphones, etc.). Patients may keep their mobile phones with them, provided they are set to silent mode.

If the patient wears glasses, a hearing aid or dentures, please inform the nurse and she will tell you where to store them.

If you have a cold, it is best to refrain from visiting, or you should wear a face mask (ask the nursing staff for one).

If your relative is disoriented, we will ask that someone accompany them even at night. In some cases, bringing a watch, photographs, or a meaningful personal item can help them feel more oriented and in a more familiar environment.

If you need the nurse, ring the bell in the room or go to the nursing station.

For hygiene reasons, it is not permitted to bring flowers or natural plants to patients.

The unit has a washbasin for patients; family members must use the washbasins located outside the unit.
