Pain management refers to a set of techniques and methodologies used to alleviate or reduce the pain experienced by a person. This pain can be acute, such as that following surgery, or chronic, such as persistent back pain or pain related to conditions such as arthritis or cancer.
First, pain is assessed through detailed medical histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests. Second, treatment goals are established, which may include reducing pain intensity, improving functionality, improving quality of life, or providing education on pain management. Thirdly, pain management is often more effective when approached from a multidisciplinary perspective, which may include doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals. It is important to note that pain treatment should be personalised, as what works for one person may not be effective for another. That is why at Centro Médico Teknon we adjust treatment over time, depending on how the patient responds.
Treatment for pain can involve several aspects. It could entail pharmacological treatment with medications ranging from common painkillers to prescription opioids. It could also entail non-pharmacological techniques such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, relaxation, mindfulness, acupuncture, and electrical therapies. Interventions could include procedures such as injections or surgery. And finally, psychological treatment to address the emotional component of pain. Alternative or complementary therapies such as chiropractic or osteopathy. The appropriate treatment depends on the cause of the pain and the patient's preferences.
Pain treatment with medication is tailored to the type and severity of the pain and the patient's medical conditions. These may include a variety of options, ranging from non-opioid painkillers such as paracetamol for mild to moderate pain, to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain accompanied by inflammation. Other painkillers, such as antidepressants, antiepileptics, and muscle relaxants, may also be used. All pain medications must be prescribed and monitored by a doctor due to potential side effects, interactions, and concerns about dependency, especially with opioids.
At Centro Médico Teknon, we treat various diseases and types of pain such as neuropathic pain (neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy, etc.), musculoskeletal pain (osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, etc.), cancer pain associated with tumours and oncological treatments, headaches and migraines, pelvic pain (endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, etc.), chronic abdominal pain (irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatitis), post-operative pain, facial pain, post-traumatic pain, vascular pain and other non-specific chronic pain.

Chronic pain is generally defined by its duration and persistence, rather than by its nature or cause. Pain is considered ‘chronic’ when it lasts longer than 3 to 6 months, although the exact duration may vary depending on the definition used. If the pain persists beyond the normal healing period or is affecting your quality of life, we recommend coming to Teknon for treatment. It is important to distinguish chronic pain from acute pain. Acute pain is a normal response of the body to injury or illness and usually diminishes as the injury heals. It serves as an alarm system that alerts the individual that something is wrong. Moreover, chronic pain, especially when its original cause is no longer present, can be considered a disease in itself, where the body's pain system is not functioning properly.
Chronic lower back pain is usually one of the most common types of pain. Several health studies and surveys have identified lower back pain as one of the leading causes of disability and absenteeism in the workplace worldwide. Other common types of chronic pain include neck pain, headache and migraine, joint pain (osteoarthritis), neuropathic pain, myofascial pain, chronic pelvic pain, and fibromyalgia.
There are various diseases and conditions that can cause chronic pain, such as musculoskeletal diseases (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis), neurological diseases (diabetic neuropathy, post-treatment neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, multiple sclerosis), oncological diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, chronic pancreatitis, and fibromyalgia. Some syndromes cause chronic pain, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) and post-laminectomy syndrome (PLS). Moreover, there are several types of chronic conditions such as gynaecological conditions (endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain), vascular conditions (intermittent claudication) and cardiac conditions (angina pectoris).
