Healthcare Ethics Committee

The Healthcare Ethics Committee is a multidisciplinary advisory body that integrates various moral ideologies from the healthcare environment. Its function is to assist citizens and health professionals in guiding their actions in cases where there are moral conflicts in clinical practice, within the framework of respect for human dignity and human rights.

After two years of working as the Promotional Committee for the Healthcare Ethics Committee of the Dexeus University Hospital, Centro Médico Teknon and Quirónsalud Hospital Barcelona, the Directorate-General for Health Planning and Regulation of the Department of Health of the Government of Catalonia accredited the three hospitals in 2015 to definitively establish the committee, approving its internal operating rules. Shortly afterwards, El Pilar Hospital was added, leaving the healthcare ethics committee as the reference point for the four hospitals in the Quirónsalud group in Barcelona.

Committee functions

  • Advise on the resolution of difficult cases in healthcare practice that raise conflicts of moral or spiritual values for the different individual convictions of those involved.
  • Develop guidelines, protocols or recommendations with guidelines for action that facilitate the handling of frequent situations that may give rise to ethical dilemmas when taking action.
  • Collaborate in the training of professionals from the four centres in the field of bioethics.

As stated in its operating rules, professionals from the four hospitals, users or family members associated with them, and management bodies may access the HEC to request advice, guidance or counselling.

Advance Medical Directives

Given that decision-making related to present (or future) health problems so that it can be applied when the person is unable to decide for themselves is a right recognised by current legislation, advance directives serve to ensure that when the person who signs them finds that, for physical or mental reasons, they cannot express their wishes, they receive healthcare that respects their life plan and that the instructions and personal criteria set by them are followed.

It is always advisable to do so after receiving all the necessary information from your doctor or healthcare staff. It is advisable to hold a discussion between the person who wishes to make advance directives, healthcare professionals and the family, followed by careful consideration.
