Densitometry
The Densitometry Unit at Centro Médico Teknon performs scans to check bone mineral density, i.e., calcium content and total body composition. The technology and structure of the unit provide a rapid testing process, which takes less than three minutes. This is a simple test that does not require any prior preparation. The device is operated by a specialised doctor with extensive knowledge in the field of bone metabolism.
Densitometry is performed using an X-ray machine, but the total radiation received by the patient is very low. It is a completely painless and non-invasive test that can be performed in different cases:
- Children with coeliac disease or lactose intolerance
- Teenagers with eating disorders, such as bulimia or anorexia
- Postmenopausal women
- Men and women who have undergone prolonged treatment with cortisone, who have problems with alcohol (alcoholism), who lead sedentary lifestyles, who have a family history of osteoporosis and fractures, or who suffer from rheumatic diseases of any kind.
The patient immediately receives the test results, which are assessed by a specialist in bone metabolism.
Bone densitometry
It measures bone density, i.e. the calcium content per square centimetre in the proximal third of the femur and spine.
Body composition
It measures calcium, fat and muscle mass content throughout the body or in specific areas.
