Pregnancy-acquired heart disease

We prevent and treat cardiovascular risks during pregnancy

In a normal pregnancy, cardiac output increases by up to 50% in order to compensate for a series of cardiovascular changes inherent to this natural condition, and it is for this reason that it is considered a predictor of future cardiovascular risk. It could be said that it is the natural equivalent of a ‘stress test’ to uncover various latent metabolic or vascular disorders.

Why does heart disease occur during pregnancy?

The delay in the age of pregnancy and the coexistence of risk factors (obesity or an unhealthy lifestyle) have led to an increase in pregnancies complicated by high blood pressure, preterm birth, miscarriage, or gestational diabetes. Furthermore, even if a woman has not previously presented cardiovascular risk factors, some of them may develop during pregnancy and persist even after delivery.

These factors, alongside the general discontinuation of follow-up care and cardiac monitoring once infants arrive, contribute to a high-risk environment for pregnant women and new mothers, potentially impacting their cardiovascular health significantly in later life.

Cardiology unit specialising in pregnancy and postpartum care

In the Pregnancy-acquired Heart Disease Unit, headed by Dr Antonela Costa Varsi, all pregnant patients with pre-existing risk factors and a high risk of developing gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, or those referred by their obstetrician for a complete cardiological evaluation, are assessed.

Within the Unit, we work closely with the gynaecology/obstetrics, endocrinology, anaesthesia and intensive care departments, monitoring patients who require it, both on an outpatient basis and during hospitalisation and postpartum..
