Ovarian stimulation

Hormone administration stimulates the ovaries, encouraging the release of an egg, or ovulation. This is useful for increasing the chances of pregnancy.

What does ovarian stimulation entail?

Ovarian stimulation is a simple treatment that consists of stimulating the ovaries to start and develop their cycle correctly, in other words, to mature an egg and release it through the process of ovulation.

This induction is carried out by administering follicle-stimulating hormones. It is important to monitor the effect on the ovaries to determine their response through ultrasound and analytical tests that will provide information on the growth and maturation of an egg. When this occurs, ovulation itself is simply stimulated with another hormone administration, and approximately 40 hours later, the egg will be released, or ovulation will occur.

In which cases is it recommended?

  • In women with polycystic ovaries
  • In women with low ovarian response
  • As an assistant in processes such as artificial insemination

What hormone doses are administered?

The hormone doses administered in these cases are low, as the aim is to mature a single egg. However, sometimes the ovaries respond by maturing more than one egg. In such cases, treatment should be suspended to avoid multiple pregnancies.

Likewise, although rare, consideration should be given to the disproportionate response to ovulation stimulation, which can lead to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. In this case, it is also advisable to suspend the cycle.

And once ovulation stimulation is complete?

Once ovulation stimulation has been completed, and knowing in advance when ovulation will occur, sexual intercourse is scheduled or artificial insemination is performed.

In vitro fertilisation treatments also involve ovulation stimulation, but in such cases the aim is to mature a large number of eggs to improve the chances of artificial fertilisation. Therefore, the hormone doses are higher and are combined with other types of drugs specifically designed for this purpose.
