Reduction in risk due to falls
Patient Safety: Reducing the Risk of Injury from Falls
Falls are one of the issues that concern us most at Centro Médico Teknon. Sometimes, not wanting to bother others or wanting to do the same activities as at home are reasons that can lead to a fall.
After assessing your risk, nursing professionals will implement a series of measures designed to prevent you from falling; but if you help us, together we will reduce the likelihood of this happening.
Take all the time you need!
Be careful and take your time when moving around the hospital.
- Make the bed before getting up.
- Keep support items close at hand: walking frames, crutches, walking sticks, etc.
- Keep everything you need within reach: telephone, television remote control, bedpan, bell, light switch, etc.
- Ring the bell to ask for assistance: notify the nursing staff if you have difficulty moving or feel unsteady when walking.
- Sit on the bed for 5 minutes before getting up: do not get up quickly, sit on the edge of the bed for a few minutes before standing up.
- Wear appropriate footwear: wear closed-toe, non-slip shoes and avoid walking barefoot.
- Use the necessary support elements.
- Certain medications increase the risk of falls: antihypertensives, diuretics, sedatives, anaesthetics, laxatives, etc. Follow the nursing recommendations.
- Do not walk on wet surfaces: 70% of falls occur when stepping on wet surfaces.
