PCR

Reference technique for detecting the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the respiratory tract during the early days of the illness.

This is performed by taking a sample of secretions from the mucosa, inserting a swab or thin stick through the nostrils and/or the pharynx.

  • Negative result: no active infection, although previous exposure to the virus cannot be ruled out.
  • Positive result: contact your doctor or health centre immediately for instructions on how to proceed. Wear a mask, wash your hands thoroughly and regularly, and self-isolate at home.

Saliva PCR:

New technique with the same specificity as conventional PCR. This avoids inserting the swab via the nasopharynx in order to obtain the sample.

The results are as valid as a nasopharyngeal PCR.

Sampling is easier for the patient, who only has to fill a small tube with their own saliva.

Test suitable for anyone who prefers this new less invasive system, which is very useful for children or elderly people.

  • Requirements for the saliva PCR test: do not eat, drink, or smoke in the 30 minutes prior to the test.
