Melena is the rectal expulsion of tarry dark blood. It can persist up to five days after the end of the hemorrhagic crisis that produces it, which in turn can be 50 ml. Fecal occult blood determinations can remain positive for three weeks. It is usually a consequence of bleeding in the upper digestive tract.
