Epilepsy Functional Unit

Epilepsy is a highly prevalent condition in the population that affects people of all ages. There are cases of complex diagnosis, which require differential diagnosis with other pathologies such as syncope or psychogenic crises. To reach a definitive diagnosis, specific tests may be necessary, such as prolonged video EEG and anatomical and functional neuroimaging tests [3 Tesla (3T) MRI with a specialized epilepsy protocol and SPECT (Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography)].

Seizures are controlled with medication and lifestyle changes in most patients. Medications must be chosen carefully based on the characteristics of the epilepsy and the patient. Undesirable adverse effects that can significantly worsen the patient's quality of life should be avoided as much as possible. In 30% of cases, however, seizures persist after trying two suitable antiepileptic drugs. This is what is known as drug-resistant epilepsy. Some of these patients are candidates for surgical treatment and others for neurostimulation techniques. The assessment of drug-resistant epilepsy should be carried out early, especially in children, to avoid long-term problems in these patients (occupational, social, cognitive, psychiatric).

Comprehensive treatment of epilepsy

We have a team of specialists at Centro Médico Teknon who are experts in a wide range of medical disciplines. Our objective is to accompany the patient from the moment the diagnostic tests are carried out and continue with the treatment. With this goal in mind, our Epilepsy Functional Unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary ensemble of nationally and internationally distinguished practitioners, focusing on neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry and neuropsychology.
