The Paediatric Emergency Department treats paediatric patients aged 0 to 16 years. It is located within the general emergency department of the centre. The unit provides age-specific equipment, facilities and services, with a dedicated entry apart from adult patients and waiting spaces tailored for paediatric needs.

The service comprises a team of paediatricians, neonatologists, surgeons and traumatologists, supported by a team of specialist nurses and administrative staff 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

To better understand how the area works, it is important to know that:

  • Service resources are established based on expected daily, weekly, seasonal, and epidemiological variables. However, as with any emergency service, circumstances may arise that alter these estimates and, as a result, waiting times at certain times may differ from those desired.
  • Patients are treated according to the severity or urgency of their condition, following a computerised and structured prioritisation (triage) system, based on the reason for consultation and the patient's condition. Therefore, the order of arrival does not always match the order in which patients are seen.
  • The service provides 24-hour support from diagnostic services, complementary tests and other specialists at the centre.
  • Our on-call paediatricians are authorised to provide telephone clarification regarding care patient care and even guidance, but they will not diagnose illnesses or prescribe treatments by phone.
  • Please remember that telephone calls interfere with the normal service operations and the care of patients who are there at that time.

Our paediatric emergency department is equipped with:

  • 6 fully equipped treatment stations
  • 3 observation stations
  • Separate external waiting room
  • Separate indoor waiting area
