Baby layette tips

At Teknon, we encourage the bond between mother and baby from birth. Our specialists have put together a series of recommendations to help you take proper care of your baby.

At Centro Médico Teknon, we encourage mother-child contact from the moment of birth. With the aim of providing your baby with proper care from birth, we offer a series of recommendations that you can follow, detailed below.

Consejos para la canastilla del bebéConsejos para la canastilla del bebéNewborn clothing should be made of cotton, batiste or perlé to avoid allergic reactions, as newborn skin is very delicate. The following items should thus be removed from your newborn’s wardrobe:

  • Angora wool (the baby could inhale the hairs that come off the wool)
  • Very thick clothing and wool
  • Any ribbons or strings that could become entangled around the baby's neck
  • Mittens

All clothing must be washed with neutral soap first before being worn for the first time, and labels must be removed.

If you want a specific outfit for your baby every day, we recommend grouping outfits according to your taste and placing them in separate bags, one for each day.

The bag should contain:

  • A cotton T-shirt and romper or bodysuit
  • Outer garments to your liking:
    • Pyjamas
    • A jumper, a romper suit and some socks
    • A jumper and some shorts
    • Etcetera

You should prepare the number of outfits based on the mother's expected stay at the centre (two days for a vaginal delivery and three days for a caesarean section). It is advisable to increase the number of spare items of clothing to around four changes of clothes in case the baby gets dirty. The following should be added to the layette:

  • A babyromper (babygrow) and bonnet
  • A towel or blanket to wrap the baby in

Centro Médico Teknon will provide wet wipes for newborns and nappies. During your stay, we will help you learn how to care for and maintain your baby's skin hygiene.

Likewise, the mother should bring a number of items such as:

  • Two nightgowns
  • Two nursing bras
  • A dressing gown
  • Closed-toe trainers
  • Personal toiletries bag for her daily hygiene
