EPOCEPOC

Asthma and COPD Unit

Led by expert specialists, our COPD Unit works to prevent Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

COPD is a lung disorder characterised by progressive and irreversible obstruction of the airways. Its main symptom is a decrease in respiratory capacity, which causes a considerable deterioration in people's quality of life, with a high incidence among smokers.

COPD is the third leading cause of death worldwide. Twelve percent of the population over the age of 40 in Spain has COPD, but approximately 80 percent has not been diagnosed.

Our unit diagnoses, treats and provides follow-up care for this disease.

To diagnose the disease, it is necessary to perform spirometry, which is a simple and brief test (lasting ten minutes) that checks whether the patient has impaired lung function.

The most effective measure to prevent the onset of the disease and also its progression is to stop smoking. Treatment with bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory inhaled medications can help improve symptoms, increase lung function, and slow the progression of the disease. In addition, respiratory physiotherapy, nutritional monitoring, psychological support, and oxygen therapy are non-pharmacological measures that can also contribute to improving patients' quality of life.
