The anatomic area of the leg region encompasses the central diaphysis of the tibia and fibula. The fractures may occur by direct impact (traffic accidents, falls from height, contact sports) or twisting mechanisms. As in the femur, treatment varies depending on the displacement of the fragments and the degree of soft tissue involvement and surrounding skin. Advances in surgical techniques have allowed, when indicated, the use of minimally invasive surgery to repair large fractures by reducing tissue aggression and facilitating the incorporation of daily activity.
