Healthcare Activity
Our specialists in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, Rheumatology and Sports Medicine work together to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal injuries, peripheral nerve injuries and joint conditions.
Many clinical cases must be and are considered from a multidisciplinary point of view, and in all surgical treatments, the most qualified team is assembled to resolve the case, with the collaboration of members of the Centre's Medical Staff or external physicians if deemed appropriate. Similarly, ITRT provides support services to other medical teams that may benefit from its experience and accreditation in the use of innovative therapeutic resources such as stem cell treatments.
Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology
Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology deals with diseases of the musculoskeletal system, including muscles, bones, or joints, whether degenerative or traumatic, acute, chronic, or recurrent. It also encompasses the study of congenital or acquired conditions in terms of prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, or research, affecting the musculoskeletal system from childhood to old age.
Although the specialty usually employs treatments that do not require surgery, there are situations in which surgery is the only possible solution. During the second half of the 20th century, alongside advances in anaesthesia techniques, the specialty underwent tremendous evolution with the development of implants and techniques for fracture fixation or spinal stabilisation and prosthetic joint replacement, techniques that today offer high levels of safety and excellent results. The advances made possible by arthroscopic techniques have been extraordinary, allowing perfect internal visualisation of the joints and treatment using very minimally invasive methods.
ITRT has a team of specialists with recognised experience in all these fields, the appropriate resources and the latest technology provided by Centro Médico Teknon for their work.
Rheumatology
Although rheumatic diseases have accompanied humans since the dawn of time, modern rheumatology, as a specialty, is only just over 50 years old. This area of medicine is dedicated to the study of medical conditions that affect the joints and/or surrounding tissues, causing pain, stiffness, and functional impairment with limited movement.
There are over 250 types of rheumatic conditions and many of them exert a mechanical and localised influence on distinct structures. These are known as degenerative diseases, the best known of which is osteoarthritis, which affects one or more joints and progressively destroys the joint cartilage. Other rheumatic diseases or autoimmune diseases, as their name suggests, cause the patient's own defences to attack not only the musculoskeletal system but also their organs (heart, lungs, etc.). Joint involvement causes severe inflammation of the synovium, which can destroy the joints.
A rheumatologist is the appropriate medical specialist to diagnose and treat these diseases. ITRT has a multidisciplinary composition, with its research team including rheumatologists with proven experience who make their knowledge available to patients.
