Menopause is a natural process in every woman’s life and usually occurs around the age of 51. It is defined when a woman has stopped menstruating for 12 consecutive months. During this stage, the body may undergo significant changes due to a decrease in the production of hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.
These physical and emotional changes can be troublesome for many women, although not all experience them in the same way. The most common physical symptoms include hot flashes, genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), which includes vaginal dryness, pain during sexual intercourse, vaginal infections and cystitis, dry and aging skin, dry eyes, hair loss, joint pain, weight gain—especially in the abdominal area—and a feeling of bloating or flatulence.
On an emotional and cognitive level, it is common to experience anxiety, depression, insomnia, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, and a decrease in libido.
In addition, estrogen deficiency may contribute to the development of more serious conditions, such as bone loss leading to osteopenia and osteoporosis, calcification and plaque buildup in the arteries, and possible cognitive decline, especially when menopause occurs prematurely.
As a specialist certified by the North American Menopause Society (NAMS), the International Menopause Society (IMS), and the Spanish Association for the Study of Menopause (AEEM), we offer our patients a comprehensive, personalized, and evidence-based treatment approach focused on safety and effectiveness to support them during this stage of life.
We always begin with natural treatments, combined with lifestyle changes, regular physical activity, and a balanced diet.
In cases where symptoms are more troublesome, we may use temporary bioidentical hormone therapy, carefully tailored to each patient. Many women find relief with low-dose treatments based on estradiol, progesterone, and sometimes testosterone, which effectively address symptoms caused by hormonal deficiency, such as hot flashes, insomnia, and anxiety—conditions that are often inadequately treated with hypnotics, antidepressants, and anxiolytics.
We also assess key aspects of women’s health that may be affected by declining estrogen levels, such as weight control, sexual health, urinary incontinence, mood changes, cardiovascular health, and the prevention of cognitive decline.
